‘WHAT IS “HABITAT”?ʼ
Iʼd like to briefly touch on what ‘habitatʼ really means... We hear a lot about ‘planting trees to create habitat for birdsʼ or ‘leaving grass to grow to create habitat for bugs and wildlife in general.ʼ What I almost never see referenced is the fact that the trees and the grass (like all plant life) are botanical creatures in their own right: they are independent creatures, born of our planet, just like us. As such, I think that we need to be honest with ourselves and recognise their equal rights to us, to be here and to thrive.
The reality is... Whilst a creature (like a tree or a bush) might provide ‘habitatʼ for other creatures, like a bird or a hedgehog, they are an entity in their own right, first and foremost. ‘Consciousnessʼ and ‘awarenessʼ are endlessly debated in our global community & especially in scientific circles but the facts are that, until we ‘becomeʼ another creature, we can never know what they might experience. They are simply independent of us and here to share our planet with us...
In fact, all of us are both ‘ourselvesʼ and a ‘habitatʼ for other creatures. We humans even act as a habitat for mites and bacteria, for example.
These are just ideas worth having dancing at the back of our minds, as we think about enabling a ‘wild spaceʼ...
